Three killed in accident, as many died in police firing
Kolkata, Sep 4 (UNI) At least three people were killed and eight injured when police opened fire to disperse an irate mob after a speeding truck ran over three members of a family at Bhiringi near the Durgapur Steel Plant in Bardhaman district today.
Inspector General of Police(law and order) Chayan Mukherjee said one Sanjay was taking his son and daughter to school when they were run over by a truck. The three succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.
Hearing the news, a 3000-strong mob gathered in the area and put up a road block. They also attacked the police party with brickbats and damaged some vehicles. At least ten policemen were injured.
Mr Mukherjee said when teargassing the mob proved ineffective, the police opened fire to disperse the crowd killing three people and injuring eight.
A strong police picket had been posted in the area.
